I’ve always been a fan of a good, healthy breakfast smoothie. Favorites like the Blackberry Smoothie (no banana), Peach, Pineapple, and Mint Smoothie, and the deliciously nutritious Green Goddess Smoothie are regulars in my routine.
But for a long time, I was skeptical about smoothie bowls. Why bother pouring a smoothie into a bowl and eating it with a spoon when you can just grab a to-go cup and head out the door?
While it’s true that most weekdays I’m still in “grab and go” mode, I’ve officially converted to smoothie bowls on the weekends.
This Dragon Fruit Smoothie Bowl is ultra-thick and creamy, and it’s made with almond milk, making it dairy-free, vegan, and vegetarian-friendly.
Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya, has a mild flavor reminiscent of kiwi or melon, and it gives this smoothie its beautiful pink hue.
The mango, banana, and pineapple add a wonderful tropical flavor that’s hard to resist.

Why Make Smoothie Bowls?
If you’re still on the fence, here are a few more reasons to jump on the smoothie bowl bandwagon:
- Stunning Presentation: Smoothie bowls let you get creative with toppings. I topped mine with some superfoods like bee pollen (it’s like gold glitter for your bowl), cacao nibs, coconut flakes, kumquats, and raspberries.
- More Filling: Surprisingly, smoothie bowls can be more satisfying than a regular smoothie. Chewing your smoothie, rather than drinking it, activates enzymes that aid digestion. I made my first smoothie bowl as a quick dinner one night, expecting to be hungry by morning, but I was pleasantly surprised to feel full and energized.
- Weekend Treat: Smoothie bowls let you dress up your smoothie for the weekend. Usually, I skip smoothies on weekends, but now, with the added excitement of toppings, I can still get my nutrients—even after a “wine tasting” weekend (which, let’s be honest, is every weekend when you open more than one bottle, right?).

Ingredients You’ll Need
This recipe requires just five ingredients, plus your favorite toppings. Start with frozen pitaya (dragon fruit), banana, mango, and pineapple (all frozen works best). Then add almond milk.
Once your smoothie bowl is blended, go wild with the toppings! I recommend using a mix of fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, and one or two superfoods for an extra nutritional boost. Check out my full list of topping ideas below.

How to Make It
- Blend: Place all the smoothie ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth.
- Serve: Pour the mixture into a bowl, add your toppings, and enjoy!
Recipe Variations
- Swap Fruits: You can substitute the frozen mango or pineapple with another fruit if you prefer a less tropical flavor. However, I recommend keeping the dragon fruit for its vibrant color and nutritional benefits, and the banana for its creamy texture.
- Add Protein: Boost the nutrition by adding a scoop of protein powder or nut butter.
- Extra Creamy: For an even creamier bowl, swap the almond milk for coconut or cashew milk.

Recipe Tips
- Keep It Thick: The key to a thick smoothie bowl is to avoid adding too much liquid. Resist the temptation!
- Use Frozen Fruit: For the best results, use frozen fruit.
- High-Powered Blender: A high-powered blender ensures a smooth, creamy texture.
- Smoothie Option: If you prefer to drink it, simply add 1/4 cup more almond milk and skip the toppings.
