The holiday spirit hit me hard this year. How do you describe the Christmas feeling? For me, it’s holiday music, drinking a Keto Eggnog, and lounging in comfy fluffy pajamas.

Made without sugar, this keto eggnog recipe is ultra-rich and creamy, tasting just like the traditional version. It’s one of my favorite holiday cocktails, and it’s hard to believe it’s actually low carb.

Pair it with my keto orange chocolate cake, gingerbread loaf, or keto gingerbread cupcakes for a super festive and easy keto treat.

What is Eggnog?

Eggnog is typically made with whole milk, cream, whipped egg whites, egg yolks, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The adult version can include alcohol such as brandy, rum, or bourbon. Traditionally consumed around Christmas in the United States and Canada, eggnog has also gained popularity in Australia.

I love eggnog, but I know people who hate it. It seems there’s no middle ground—you either like it or you don’t. Interestingly, the store-bought eggnog in cartons often does not contain fresh eggs.

Is Eggnog Keto?

Traditional eggnog is not keto-friendly because just one cup has over 20 grams of carbs, mostly from sugar or corn syrup. Alcohol is not typically recommended on a keto diet, but it’s okay to enjoy occasionally.

That’s why I created this low-carb, sugar-free, and gluten-free eggnog recipe to enjoy during the holidays.

Keto Eggnog Ingredients

To prepare this delicious custard-based drink, served either warm or chilled, you’ll need just five main ingredients and a few classic spices. This recipe makes enough low-carb eggnog for at least four guests. The ingredients include:

  • Almond milk: Use any unsweetened nut milk you like.
  • Heavy cream: Coconut cream is a delicious dairy-free alternative.
  • Egg yolks: To temper the yolks, slowly add them to the milk to avoid scrambling.
  • Sweetener: My favorite is allulose for its zero aftertaste, but erythritol and xylitol work well too.
  • Grated nutmeg: For extra flavor.
  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla extract
  • Brandy, bourbon, or dark rum: To taste.

Different Ways to Make Keto Eggnog

Instant Keto Eggnog

Add all the ingredients to a blender and pulse for 20-30 seconds. It’s ready to serve and, although not as frothy and creamy as the classic recipe, it’s mess-free. Let it sit in the fridge for 1 hour to enhance the holiday vibe.

Cooked Classic Eggnog Keto Recipe

This is my favorite method because it’s creamy and reduces the risk of foodborne illness. If using raw eggs, ensure they are pasteurized.

Egg Whites Classic Eggnog Recipe

Follow the cooked eggnog recipe steps. In a medium mixing bowl, beat the egg whites to soft peaks, then gradually whisk them into the chilled mixture. Note that this version can taste like unfinished ice cream.

Child-Friendly Keto Eggnog

For an alcohol-free version, omit the booze and replace it with rum extract, adding low-carb milk instead.

Chocolate Keto Eggnog

For a twist, mix 1/2 bar melted keto-friendly dark chocolate into the liquids, then add 2 tablespoons of high-quality cocoa powder to the egg yolks. Follow the steps as usual.

Tips for Making the Best Keto Eggnog

  • Temper egg yolks properly to prevent scrambling.
  • Use an instant thermometer to ensure the drink reaches 160°F for safety.
  • Serve topped with sugar-free whipped cream or sprinkled with cinnamon and nutmeg.

How to Store Keto Eggnog

  • Refrigerator: Store eggnog without alcohol for 2-3 days, or with alcohol for up to 2 weeks.
  • Freezer: Pour into a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 6 months.
